This week it was pretty much all Plasma 6 all the time. With the release date four and a half months away, work is kicking into high gear to make sure that we hit our deadline!

Kickoff now has an option to move its sidebar over to the other side of the main view. This has better Fitts’ Law adherence and zero risk of accidental category switching if you use the mouse pointer to activate Kickoff and launch Favorites more often than you activate it with the Meta key or switch categories (Forest Ix, link)
The default keyboard shortcut used to open the Activity Switcher has been changed to Meta+A, so that its prior shortcut Meta+Tab can be used some something else, which is coming soon… (Niccolò Venerandi, link)

Minor question re: the image which shows Discover’s “About” page… I notice that the title bar says “About Discover” and right below that in larger type it says the same thing. I just played with Discover and I notice that the title bar changes its text depending on which tab you’re in. Is there a reason why the title bar changes its text? Especially if the meaning is duplicated in larger type right below?

So the titlebar text gets mirrored in a bunch of different places:
– Task Manager task buttons and tooltips
– Window Thumbnails in Overview/Present Windows
– The Alt+Tab task switcher
So it would probably not be wise to change the titlebar text to always be just the app name.
However I agree with you that in the context of the titlebar itself, the text displayed there is often duplicative of text below it somewhere in the window. However only the app knows this! No automatic heuristic would work. So to fix this, we would probably need to let the app specify when the titlebar text shouldn’t actually be displayed in the titlebar, but should be set in general so that other things can use it.
Would you mind submitting a feature request for that?

For the Folders area where it shows paths of the folders, yet the most informative part of the folder paths are elided because there isn’t enough horizontal room, could a heuristic be applied that if the path refers to $USER, then $USER is chopped off and only a relative path is shown?
In the photo, it shows “/home/nate/Pic…” but I think it’d be more useful if it showed “Pictures/Camping” instead, for example.

About the Kirigami.InlineViewHeader: Great work, but I think a little bit less padding would make the header look better. It’s kind of huge, isn’t it?

It’s as tall as it needs to be to fit the height of a button with our standard 4px of padding above and below it. If we made the header any shorter, we’d have to make our vertical padding nonstandard, or remove it entirely, or make the button height nonstandard.
Headers without buttons are shorter, because they don’t need to accommodate the height of a button.
