If your notifications look kind of stupid in Plasma 6.3.4, it’s my fault

This is for everyone upgrading to Plasma 6.3.4, which was released yesterday. I suspect that some of you will notice something slightly wrong with notifications; the top padding is off, causing text to look not vertically centered most of the time.

This is my fault. The recent bug-fixes I made to notification spacings and paddings were backported to Plasma 6.3.4, but ended up missing a part that positions the text labels nicely when there’s body text or an icon, and didn’t notice this until after 6.3.5 was released. The fix was just merged and backported for Plasma 6.3.5, so unless your distro backports the fix (I’ve already emailed the appropriate mailing list about this) you’ll have to live with slightly ugly label positioning until then. Sorry folks! My bad.

Once you have the fix — either because your distro backports it or because you’ve waited until Plasma 6.3.5 — notification text positioning should look better again:

  1. Read this while waiting for 6.3.4 to arrive on my F41 system (which will hopefully make my system stable again — think it’s this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501688).

I think it reveals a lot about the project when a minor visual glitch like this one prompts such an apology!!! Kudos to you, Nate, and thank you to all KDE developers. KDE Plasma etc. is an amazing piece of software and a true joy to work with.

    1. I fully agree. Mistakes happen, which is what all bugs really are. Informing about them and taking steps to correct them is all we can ask for, and it’s highly appreciated. I look very much forward to having the display issue fixed, even if my notifications will look a bit wonky for a while. 😀

Speaking of notifications, I have my Kontact calendar enabled and every time I log in, I get bombarded with old notifications that I just let time out instead of dismissing. Is there a good way for me to limit the notifications to not show missed notifications from the past, or ideally to limit them to a few hours back? I don’t really need to see that I had an appointment three days ago, I either let it time out intentionally or I missed it; nothing to do about it now.

  2. No worries Nate, mistakes are human and bugs happen. This makes me happy to be a KDE user because it reminds you of the human behind the project. It also shows your commitment to the cause: you won’t ever see this with Windows or MacOS
