Talk at Akademy 2025 — minding the big picture: opportunity from chaos

At Akademy 2025 this year, I had the privilege of giving a talk about a big picture topic close to my heart, and you can watch it here:

For those who prefer reading over watching and listening, I’ll give a quick summary:

I believe that the challenges facing the world today present an opportunity for KDE to grow in importance and reach due to a variety of favorable trends embedded in the chaos and conflict, including:

Increasing skepticism of traditional proprietary American big tech
Increasing EU public funding opportunities
Windows 11 sucking and losing its edge for gaming
*Postscript: MacOS Tahoe stumbling and being publicly mocked as well

But this is a window of opportunity that I think will close. So I encouraged everyone to think about how we can make KDE software ready for adoption from the following perspectives:

Being known about in the first place
Looking good enough to be taken seriously
Being easy to download or otherwise acquire
Working properly and having enough features
Having enough support resources and an articulable “lower total cost of ownership” story

Because if we’ve got all five, our offerings will start to look irresistible, and I think we’ll gain market share very quickly!

Donations, with your start with “overtaking” the Donation at an other Land as “Factory” is a manny more Work possble at KDE/Plasma, i have feel it in kde, how it grows as “contrast”/in comparson to KDE 4.0 up to 5’fe … And that’s really good, because it’s more possible.. but i want say … comerce is the best.. i whant more say, a good mix with privatework.. hobbylike like free art or coding and the Programmer as Jobtaker or how it can say, is more perfect because then everything fits together and grows better up in naturally way ..

apropo, Chaos, all was rumors make a developing in it self and brings changing.. in bad, but also in good way, you’re right … give Trend, gight, because i also have create the W2K,Xp and W7 Icons, for give the peoples the Icons what’s so liked and have make also possible the trend to see : “hey, there gives WinXP icons in Linux, how.. a Icontheme ? Cool, how i get this ” because this have i build the themes for make it possible to bring more peoples to Linux… as example … and hey, i have see the manny icons from google and other Factorys.. great thumpsup 🙂

At moment is it as example the Win10 to 11even and cloud-account, this concerns many people because they want to keep their data anonymous and don’t want to go online, but rather keep it stationary. And this can also see to use Linux with KDE/Plasma.. (because Cloud and Win11sucking)

1% is a point of start, 15% is a good run where possible for making more (letzrockg) 😉

If you haven’t heard of KDE/Plasma yet, you have to imagine it like this: several islands(bubbles), different living spaces. Some have contracts with MS for computer systems, contracts with parts manufacturers in various forms, and you do the development for the whole thing yourself, so in the end you hardly get any new information and then you can’t switch over so easily. That was a look at an island. Let’s say a German car company or manufacturer, for example. And there are so many other islands to enter and to imagine that there is one. That’s why there are always training courses from different companies that introduce themselves and present their latest products. It would certainly be an advantage if you did half an hour of training on Linux for different key companies, maybe free of charge, so that you can also have a sniff at Linux alongside your work, especially KDE/Plasma and the interface, connections to databases, online services within a company, and security and information security, which is what distinguishes Linux from comes with it as standard and not like Microsoft, where you don’t really know what’s built into the code in a closed system… and so on….
So, they knows not, if you not making know, because an total other Island and Plants, you must this bring in to be usable and knowed .. They work in hers Bubbles and dont see what’s other exist, this must be change with schoolings and introduces of KDE/Plasma.

Installations, hey look on Draketools, take a Mandrake/Mandriva 8/9 and install this, look on the installer,
this installer is like WinXP but more themesupported there was 2-4 Colorthemes for the installer, and it was also rom-online install possible, we had a great installer with Draktools but it was damaged by taking the Squash-iso installer at 2012 around a pregenerate working linuxsystem where only p**** on the Harddisk.. you should take a Mandrake/Mandriva Iso and test in Virtualbox..
This installer schould reprogramming in C or C# then have we a really easy installer with a Configuring, Partitioning, Packetselector , check Drakinstaller out.

because Customers and Fitures, there is ever a possible for use a programmer, let them this fiture programming and let it make opensource andf a packet for all in the community, then it is not only for one Customer builded up, no, then can all this use.. and the programmer is also supported.. if .. the Customer it spezially want, the matter is then not lost and all can it use..

Because the WorkBubble at the Workspace at Computer, Windows NT users aren’t used to (get used to it) setting up and styling their environment the way they find most comfortable, which is also an advantage for KDE/Plasma/Linux.
With Plasma, it’s possible to style your desktop so that you can work in your environment the way you like… you just have to know that first. Everyone is an individualist and everyone sees the world differently (worldview), and that’s the greatest advantage of Plasma, where you can point out to people that Plasma has this advantage!

aarch, right, look on RasberryPI5 with 16Gig ram, this could a great possibility for support something, it is give a M2 PCI enhancement for ssd drives, if you use that, have you a classic computer instead a floppy a micro-sd-card and the power is like actual Personal Computer…
and this should be really hugh supportet, how manny wat’s need a IBM compatible Powersuppely and how many neet a Arm/aarch Computer,
as example, i by my self have a RP5 at my basement running as a 8TB Webserver with 8Gig ram.. and it’s runs damn fast..
And right, the first have to make in the commerce Marked to even achieve the market share.

Gaming :
And imo, the whole Gamingindustrie is on MS-OS and for porting it, or change to Linux is a hughe work if linux not over 50% Marked share,
then becomes it by self, if the whole Gamingindustrie see to make in linux also Money.. but by side, should wine clean unning as Plasma-subsystem as likea natural WinNT-Subsystem.. in my opinion..
Plasma should Support Wine as a “withload” by Plasma-Startin Wine…

ITunes.. really, it’s a Spything like MS-Windows-thing bg, Of course, Apple wants to know what and with what requirements their programs work lol
hmmm… maybe a Apple-Space Emulator as sub in the User-Space where emulates a Apple-computer like wine it does ?
Maby Starts Apple-Programms in an own virtual Space with connection to the User-FS and emulate diffrend config as Emulations
to make it possible for execute Apple Images and Programms in the Userspace Sandbox like… As suggestion/idea.. and custom-specific solut

Outside Community… (thinking with..) exist Patent’s, what it’s not so easy possible for using it..
spwzially on the room of commerce, any whant hold his iseas by his self for making Money too ,
that the company can also support itself .. and can also pay the employees ..

Offering controls demand. Only when people are aware that something is available can they start to demand it. But first you have to offer (train) what is available in order to then be able to meet demand. Raise the lollipop in the air and ask who would like a lollipop.

That means, simply make an appointment for an interface training session, state your target group in the company, such as the workplace interface, all employees who work on a computer, and explain what servers are, what Wayland is and what a Plasma interface is like that can run on any Linux system, what the interface can be used for, what all the things you can hook up, plugins, skinning, icon theming, background works like WinNT, but that you can also hook up applications to the desktop in order to keep an eye on various things, such as Bitcoin, stock exchange, CPU, hard drive space and much more… something like that, that kind of thing..

That was an interesting lecture, well done ! 🙂

Will KDE make an exception in its Vision for benevolent Western democracies when government-mandated spyware rollouts (e.g. Chat Control) begin in the West, or will KDE simply shut down?

  IANAL, but:
  - KDE doesn’t fall under Chat Control and al.
  - KDE is an organisation producing software, but it’s not distributing it (beside the upcoming KDE Linux distro), so that question should not be adressed to KDE-the-community, but to KDE-shipping-distros (ubuntu, fedora, …): they would be the ones compelled by law (or not) to leave the market
