It’s time for week 63 in KDE’s Usability & Productivity initiative. These things are getting so huge I’m going to have to start splitting them up into multiple posts, because KDE contributors just don’t stop fixing and improving things! Expect more to come soon, but for now, here’s what we’ve got for you:
New Features
- Blender files now get thumbnail previews (Chinmoy Ranjan Pradhan, KDE Applications 19.04.0):
- You can now launch Dolphin at any time using the new Meta+E global keyboard shortcut (me: Nate Graham, KDE Applications 19.04.0)
- Spectacle’s settings window now displays a handy preview of how the filename will actually look (David Redondo, KDE Applications 19.04.0):
Bugfixes & Performance Improvements
- Discover is now actually able to install apps on openSUSE when source packages are enabled (Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen, KDE Plasma 5.15.4)
- Discover no longer inappropriately lets you try and always fail to disable Flatpak repos (Aleix Pol Gonzalez, KDE Plasma 5.15.4)
- The Media Frame widget now renders images correctly and also uses less memory (me: Nate Graham, KDE Plasma 5.15.4)
- Items in the Application Dashboard whose names are very long and get elided now display the full name in a tooltip on hover (Tranter Madi, KDE Plasma 5.15.4)
- System Settings’ tooltips now correctly display monochrome icons (me: Nate Graham, KDE Plasma 5.15.4):
- The System Settings “GTK/GNOME Application Style” page now appears in search results (Harald Sitter, KDE Plasma 5.15.4)
- When re-arranging favorite app icons via drag-and-drop on the Application Dashboard, the dashboard no longer disappears and then launches the dragged app once the drag is finished (Tranter Madi, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- Plasma panels, widgets, tooltips, and dialogs now have the correct background color again when using Qt 5.12.2, which broke it (Fabian Vogt, KDE Frameworks 5.57)
- The “Get new dialogs throughout KDE Software no longer always display an “Unknown Open Collaboration Service API Error. (405)” message on the bottom of the window (Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen, KDE Frameworks 5.57)
- The Baloo file indexing service now immediately stops indexing folders added to its exclusions list (Igor Poboiko, KDE Frameworks 5.57)
- The confirmation dialogs for deleting or trashing items now always display the correct titles and text (Jonathan Marten, KDE Frameworks 5.57)
- Certain unconventional Plasma themes now look like they’re supposed to (Friedrich Kossebau, KDE Frameworks 5.57):
- Re-arranging items in Dolphin’s Places panel once again works properly when some items are hidden (Tigran Gabrielyan, KDE Applications 19.04.0)
- Dolphin’s tooltip now correctly displays monochrome icons (David Hallas, KDE Applications 19.04.0):
User Interface Improvements
- Discover’s Updates page received a major usability overhaul: apps and packages now have distinct “downloading” and “installing” phases, and after an item has finished installing, it disappears from view (Aleix Pol Gonzalez, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- Discover now displays a busy indicator to show that it’s actually doing something while checking for updates (me: Nate Graham, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- Discover’s tasks completion indicator now uses a real progress bar, which looks much nicer (Aleix Pol Gonzalez, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- When closing Task Manager tasks by middle-clicking on them, as long as the cursor stays over the Task Manager, the remaining tasks do not resize as they reposition themselves to be under the cursor, so you can keep middle-clicking the same pixel to quickly close more tasks (Thomas Surrel, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- Discover now shows any AppImage applications that are available on https://opendesktop.org in the correct category (Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- Power and battery-related messages are now worded more naturally, with less technobabble and jargon (Krešimir Čohar, KDE Plasma 5.16.0)
- The help documentation in KHelpCenter now has an improved and modernized look (Carl Schwan, KDE Frameworks 5.57):
- Breeze-themed Kirigami inline messages no longer have a drop shadow on the bottom, giving them a sleeker look and 100% visual consistency with their QWidget counterpart used in non-Kirigami apps (Filip Fila, KDE Frameworks 5.57)
- Dolphin now defaults to showing the same layout for all folders (Elvis Angelaccio, KDE Applications 19.04.0)
Next week, your name could be in this list! Not sure how? Just ask! I’ve helped mentor a number of new contributors recently and I’d love to help you, too! You can also check out https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved, and find out how you can help be a part of something that really matters. You don’t have to already be a programmer. I wasn’t when I got started. Try it, you’ll like it! We don’t bite!

Iam sorry I was in work when I wrote this
Here is the thing in kde the check box look so strange to me when selected
I put the Mac is one and material design one to compare kde one to them
I hope I explain better now

Yes I agree that the Breeze-style checkbox looks somewhat odd for not actually having a checkmark in it. I plan to look into that at some point.

Hi ! Thanks you all again so much ! Just wondering about “Dolphin now defaults to showing the same layout for all folders (Elvia Angelaccio, KDE Applications 19.04.0)”. I’m used to quickly selecting a different view for specific folders (which is remembered subsequently). Will I have to manually save the view for each folder I want a view different from the default one ? (also, is it possible to choose a view for subfolders of a given folder ?)

As ar I understand, Dolphin will use the default look that is in settings without creating the .directory files. However, when you change the layout manually, it will save it automatically into the .directory file as it used to. It’s just it won’t be creating unnecessarily those files all the time. This currently creates some issues with certain use cases.
I suspect, that if you already have .directory files, they won’t get deleted so the update won’t change anything for you and will show this behavior for newly created folders. So no, you won’t have to save settings for each folder manually and it will work as good as previously but be more clean and efficient on the global scale.
This sounds like a good improvement.

In latest Manjaro this is not true. Changing layout of one folder changes them all.

You can just change the default setting if you want. Also, yes Dolphin can set custom views for all sub-folders. Just turn on per-folder view settings, then go to View > Adjust View Properties, adjust the settings how you want, click “Apply To current folder and all subfolders”, and then click Apply.

Yeah. This was reset to use common properties for all folders.
Can be changed back in: Dolphin Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> General -> Behavior -> View

I really like that Dashboard app names are finally fixed. I saw this issue for years and was too lazy to report it but it was irritating and in many cases, it made impossible to choose the right app, because two different ones had the same icon and the same beginning of the name so they were indistinguishable. I can’t wait till I get the update with that fix but if that is 5.15 this will be soon :).
Also, love the long-needed and asked for changes in install and updates behavior. If this works out, this will be the first serious version of Discover. Without it always felt like a sidekick or a curiosity app. I believe this was one of the big points why people hated using it. Maybe that is not the whole reason but still an important one so this will be a milestone for Discover!
It was fun to see “the unconventional theme” and it’s incredible that Plasma or Kwin can do that. Most people have no idea. Maybe this will start more of such fun projects?
The sheer amount of fixes and improvements amazes me each week! I love it!

Thanks, I agree that improving the updates UI is critical to making Discover a production-ready app. That’s why I’ve been focusing so much on it. 🙂

Really nice, thanks for another week of great news from KDE Community/Software. The Global shortcut for launch Dolphin has been one of the first things i always was doing at first on my Plasma 5 configuration, (i was missing it by default from Windows, yeah, i admit it, and had it really interiorized, so it is more comfortable to me like this.
Nice improvements as every Sunday.
Bests Nate & KDE Community ^^.

Hi Nate, Thank you kindly for your great, and interesting weekly reports.
In connection with Spectacle’s file names, what are your thoughts on a default which adopts a more human friendly readable form by adding hyphens? Hopefully helpful for those with Dyslexia, or other reading disabilities.

Sounds like a reasonable idea. Feel free to send a patch! This would be a very easy first contribution. Here’s one example of where it would need to be changed: https://cgit.kde.org/spectacle.git/tree/src/ExportManager.cpp#n174
Check out https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/development for information regarding how you would do this.

Thanks for the great articles.
Every week I await them a little, and when they appear – very passionate to see them.
BTW do you know how to evaluate the current status of migration of the KDE infrastructure to GitLab.
Is it even evaluated to be real, is the process going…
I track the GitLab issue of that.
Also, if you would want to, that status can be probably included in the news.
I am just happy that it is happening, and that these posts are happening. I need nothing else for happiness.
Instead of migration from Plasma to tiling (full EXWM or Xmonad) – I’ve thought about it a little – and made from Plasma a state of the art tiling window manager for myself with global menu in taskbar, titlebarless&borderless windows, several virtual desktops for the different content. So far it is the best UX I had in my life.
By the way, I just thought that I not even thought before – core GNOME applications can’t be usable with titlebarless windows because of their titlebar design choise. That is additional point to your article on titlebars.

It looks like we’re doing it! I will be reporting on the status as more information becomes available.

Thank you. That is all I really need for happiness.
I would be glad to make more sharing/reporting/requesting/looking what I can do on GitLab.
I all the time try to contribute to free software everywhere as I go through the journey. As a result, I have a number of drive-by PRs to different projects.
GitLab would encourage people like me to keep closer attention & participation in the all kinds of KDE projects.

Thanks, that’s what we keep hearing over and over again, and it’s one of the major reasons why we’re migrating. 🙂

But why ‘E’?! It’s more logically to set it to ‘D’ due to it’s correlation with dolphin’s first latter (which is easier to remember). Or you’re trying to copy M$ desktop shortcuts?

Hey, a user in Phoronix named cybertraveler pointed out a exploit could be made by targeting the thumbnail system:

Is that really possible with the code you’re using?
