Akademy 2018 talk: Konquering the World

I had the pleasure of attending Akademy this year–my first time. Not only that, the organizers were actually crazy enough to let me give a talk! In it, I discuss my view of how we can systematically improve the competitiveness and reach of KDE Plasma and KDE apps, and what you can do to be a part of this effort. This master plan is what guides my KDE work. I talk about how the Usability & Productivity initiative fits into the plan, but the plan itself is much more ambitious. If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s a method to my madness… here it is!

If you’re interested, the Akademy organizers have posted a video of it:

If you feel like this effort is worthwhile and that my leadership of it is important, consider becoming a patron on Patreon, LiberaPay, or PayPal. Also consider making a donation to the KDE e.V. foundation.

  1. I hate M$ products, but i’m not big fan of LO too. I like Calligra, that’s why i’m contributor in the project, it should be more widely use, also it should give some love to Kabon too. M$ products are disasters and every time you try to make compatibility with them is just waste of time.

    1. This! Karbon is dying. It needs much love. It has potential. Not even Inkscape is as quick as Karbon for opening and editing vectors.

    2. Should I be using Calligra instead of LibreOffice? What’s the elevator pitch? Does it work as well? Are all the apps actively developed?

    3. Sure not, you can use whatever you want. You can try them, report bugs, etc. I mean they can be used much more to have higher quality, they are maintained as well. Mainly goals to be used open formats than closed ones.

    4. CalligraOffice is former KOffice. So it’s Qt/KDE native and it’s much more lightweight. But not as advanced and much more bugged, including many problems with font/layout rendering (in the past it required taking special care of installing fonts and proper config for freetype)

  2. I think a huge obstacle is the Nvidia support (tearing under Xorg and no Wayland support). Maybe a funding campaign could solve this.
